Global Water Challenge

Cargill Currents is a GWC and Cargill partnership platform that works to address water challenges and advance water security in priority communities and basins around the world.

Global Water Challenge

Through 2025, Cargill Currents has reached more than 150,000 people with improved access to safe water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) services across Cargill’s priority communities in Latin America and West Africa. The program has also advanced the empowerment of over 60,000 women by creating time savings, building skills, and supporting income-generating opportunities.

In addition, the partnership is driving measurable environmental benefits in Asia, Europe and North America:

  • 2,738 hectares committed to regenerative agriculture practices
  • 1,214 hectares across four floodplains rehabilitated, strengthening watershed health and resilience
  • 52.3 hectares of land under improved management
  • 9.3 kilometers of river habitat restored
  • 2 micro wetlands restored across 4.8 hectares

Together, these efforts are helping protect vital water resources, strengthen community well-being, and promote long-term sustainability in the regions where Cargill operates.

The program advances water security, promotes economic development, and delivers multiple socio-economic and sustainability co-benefits, including improved community health, improved farmer livelihoods, women’s empowerment, and community resilience to climate change.

Tailored Solutions for Diverse Water Challenges

  • Water challenges are rarely the same from one region to the next. Each community, basin, and landscape face unique pressures – whether it’s access, quality, availability, or sustainable use. That’s why a one-size-fits-all approach simply doesn’t work.
  • At the heart of Cargill Currents is a commitment to localized solutions. Beyond expanding WASH access, the partnership stands out for its adaptable, solutions-driven model, responding directly to the specific water-related needs of each region.
  • From addressing seasonal scarcity in one area to improving water quality in another, every project is shaped by on-the-ground realities. Backed by assessments, surveys, community input, and local stakeholder engagements, these efforts range from comprehensive water solutions to targeted smaller-scale interventions that make a meaningful difference.
  • By combining Cargill’s agricultural expertise with Global Water Challenge’s leadership in the water sector, the partnership brings smart, sustainable solutions to regions that need them most – places where Cargill operates, and where its employees live, work, and care deeply about their communities.

Community-based approaches across priority watersheds

As water challenges vary across regions, water access programs are tailored to meet local needs and include water-smart agriculture, skills-building and income generating activities.
