AWSI protects and restores critical watersheds, expands access to WASH, and strengthens the institutions and communities that manage water resources. Through this work, the initiative also advances sustainable agriculture and creates opportunities for women and youth – building lasting water security and resilience across Africa.

As part of the Africa Water Stewardship Initiative, the Coca-Cola system recently invested $1.94 million to support restoration of Tanzania’s Wami Ruvu Basin, a crucial watershed serving the country’s commercial capital.
Led by GWC and implemented by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) in partnership with the Wami-Ruvu Basin Water Board (WRBWB), the project advances sustainable watershed management and strengthens long-term water resilience.

Through targeted programming within the Africa Water Stewardship Initiative, GWC manages a multi-partner effort to advance sustainable land and water management across nearly 3,000 hectares of degraded farmlands, rangelands, and riparian corridors.
Working with implementing partner The Nature Conservancy, local governments, community bodies, and NGOs, the effort is achieving strong early momentum towards its goal of replenishing 540 MM+ liters, planting 350,000 trees, restoring 10 kilometers of river and shoreline, and equipping 4,750 farmers with sustainable agriculture practices.

Led by GWC and implemented by WWF Namibia in partnership with the City of Windhoek, the project will replenish 451 MM+ liters of water annually and restore the ecological function of other critical catchments while strengthening stakeholder collaboration.

Today, the Africa Water Stewardship Initiative (AWSI) platform, with The Coca-Cola Company and its bottling system, and our Cargill Currents platform tackle Africa’s complex water security challenges across 41 countries through watershed restoration, water access, sustainable agriculture, systems strengthening, and community-led governance.
