In 2021, Global Water Challenge and The Starbucks Foundation partnered to strengthen community resilience and economic opportunities for women in key East African coffee-and-tea-growing regions.

As part of GWC’s women for water platform, this collaboration prioritizes improving WASH access as a key enabler to health and economic opportunity.

With the GWC-led WASH & Women Empowerment (WAWE) program and implementing partners Amref Health Africa and the Tanzania Association of Environmental Engineers, the effort also supports smallholder women farmers’ entrepreneurship.

WASH systems and training promotes community health across Tanzania.

Through The Starbucks Foundation and GWC partnership, households and communities in Tanzania’s Kilolo, Mufindi, and Njombe districts gained WASH services, including 26 protected water sources, 12 rehabilitated systems supplying over 100 water points, 10 sanitation blocks, 19 handwashing stations, and eight Menstrual and Hygiene Management rooms.

Reinforced by economic empowerment training and the formation of entrepreneurship groups, the effort enables women to lead enterprises and influence household decisions.
