Kenya’s Upper Tana and Mid-Galana watersheds, which supply 95% of the capital city Nairobi’s water and hydropower, face severe water insecurity due to deforestation, climate variability, and competing urban and agricultural demands.
Through targeted programming within the Africa Water Stewardship Initiative, GWC manages a multi-partner effort to advance sustainable land and water management across nearly 3,000 hectares of degraded farmlands, rangelands, and riparian corridors.
Working with implementing partner The Nature Conservancy, local governments, community bodies, and NGOs, the effort is achieving strong early momentum towards its goal of replenishing 540 MM+ liters, planting 350,000 trees, restoring 10 kilometers of river and shoreline, and equipping 4,750 farmers with sustainable agriculture practices.
